Watercolor Waves Cowl, free crochet pattern in bright jewel colors, Susan Carlson of Felted Button | Colorful Crochet Patterns

::Watercolor Waves Cowl--Free Crochet Pattern::

I'm back after a wonderful long weekend with my daughter. I apologize that it has taken me longer to get this ready for you than hoped. But mainly because I had to make TWO of these
lovely creations.

Yes. I had to make two so that I could play with the colors. Ohhhhh, they really make me happy! I wore the brightest one today with an all black and white outfit--quite striking if I do say so myself.

So comfy. So lightweight yet warm. So quick to work up. It is ever so simple.

The pattern for the cowl and flower is available below as a PDF in my Felted Button shop or on Etsy here for a small fee. The 7 page downloadable version is a nice and tidy printable PDF which also includes several pictures to help you through with the trickier parts. You can print just the written portion (2 pages) or the whole thing with its 14 tutorial pictures. Thanks so much for supporting me and my ability to provide free patterns.

I love the flower so much I'm thinking of making a coverlet with multi-colored loopy joined flowers for my bed. If I do, I will share with you the join-as-you-go method I am holding hostage in my head--so be certain to check back. Update: You can find the Loopsy Daisy Coverlet that I designed with this flower for free here.

I used Lion Brand Amazing yarn for these two cowls--less than one skein each. The long runs of color work up so beautifully for that watercolor effect and the drape is perfect. They make it in so many colors you're certain to find a skein that perfectly suits your style. Here goes with the pattern:
Materials:

  • Yarn: Lion Brand Amazing (One Skein); Color: Pink Sands or any colorway of your choice; 53% wool, 47% acrylic, Worsted Weight (4)
  • Hook: I (5.5mm)
  • Tapestry or yarn needle

Dimensions: 25 inches (63.5cm) in circumference X 6.5 inches (16.5cm) high

Notes:

  • The watercolor effect of this cowl can be achieved with any colorway of Lion Brand Amazing yarn to suit your taste or any worsted weight yarn that has similar long color runs
  •  You will be working in the round without turning and joining with a sl st to the first st of each round
  •  If you want to adjust the circumference of the cowl, the wave pattern repeats in multiples of 16-1

Special Stitches:

  • BLO (Back Loop Only): insert hook through only the back loop of the specified stitch. (Used for Rounds 2-9.)
  • dc3tog (dc 3 stitches together): (yo, insert hook in next st, yo, draw loop through st, yo, draw through two loops on hook) 3 times, yo, draw through 2 loops, yo, draw through all 4 loops on hook
  • dc2tog (dc 2 stitches together): (yo, insert hook in next st, yo, draw loop through st, yo, draw through two loops on hook) 2 times, yo, draw through 2 loops, yo, draw through all 3 loops on hook

Cowl:

Ch 79, being careful not to twist the chain, join into a ring with a sl st to the first ch

Rnd 1:  ch 1, dc in same st as joining, dc in next 5 ch, 3dc in next ch, dc in next 6 ch, *dc3tog over next 3 ch, dc in next 6, 3dc in the next ch, dc in the next 6 ch, rep from * around to within the last 3 ch, dc3tog over last 3 ch, sl st to first dc of Rnd 1

Rnd 2-9:
(Note: These Rounds will be worked in the BLO around—see special stitches.)

ch 1, skip same st as joining, dc in next 6, 3dc in next, dc in next 6,  *dc3tog over next 3 sts, dc in next 6 dc, 3dc in next, dc in next 6; rep from * around ending with dc2tog, join with sl st to first dc

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Loopy Flower:

Rnd 1 – magic ring, sc 18 in ring, pull tail to close ring loosely (ring will be open approximately ¾ inch or 2cm), sl st to first sc

(Note: Rnds 2-4 will all be worked into Rnd 1)

Rnd 2 – *ch 7, sk 2 ch, sl st in next; rep from * 6 times, join with sl st to first sl st of round

Rnd 3 – Pulling loops from Rnd 2 forward, sl st into next sc, *ch 9, sk 1 sc, sl st in next unworked sc of Round 1; rep from * 6 times around, sl st to first sl st

Rnd 4 – Pulling loops from Rnd 2-3 forward, *ch 11, sl st in next unworked sc of Round 1; rep from * 6 times around, sl st to first sl st (Note: Rnd 4 is completed the same way as Rnd 3 but with petal loops with 11 chains and slip stitched into the remaining free sc from Rnd 1.)

Fasten off leaving 8 inch (20cm) tail for attaching to cowl. Weave in ends.
