Mama's Wash Cloths--Free Crochet Pattern

My sweet mom loves when I make her wash cloths and dish cloths. Someone asked me why crocheted wash cloths are so great. And although I love the possible textures, and the ease of wash and functional use, I think the thing I like about them most is that they are HANDMADE!! (right, Fauna?)

So I came up with this simple little textured cloth that works up without much brain energy but can be made in any colors or any size. Best part...

...I'm sharing the free pattern here.
Because my mom has always taught me, "Sharing is nice."

And there is still time to make several for Mother's Day. A sweet and thoughtful gift, I think.

Materials:
H hook (5mm)
Worsted Weight Kitchen Cotton Yarn (less than 100yards/90m) -- the solid-color cloths shown are made with Bernat Handicrafter and Lily Sugar n Cream while the striped cloths are made with I Love This Cotton!

Dimensions:
9 inches/23cm square

Note:
~If you are interested in making your cloth a different size, adjust the width by chaining an odd number of chains to the desired width and then repeating the pattern row (Row 2) to the desired height.
~You will be working sc into dc and dc into sc across the row. This keeps things straight and provides the lovely texture.
~Make yours multi-colored by changing colors throughout where you want for some fun variety.

Mama's Wash Cloth Pattern:
ch 31
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next ch, (sc in next ch, dc in next ch) rep to end, turn (30 sts)
Row 2: ch 1 (does NOT count as st), sc in first dc, dc in next sc, (sc in next dc, dc in next sc) rep to end, turn (30 sts)
Rep Row 2 until desired height (approx. 9in/23cm) or until cloth is square

When you reach the desired height, do not fasten off, if you choose to work the border. If you opt not to complete a border, fasten off and weave in ends.

Border: (Optional)
Complete reverse sc (crab stitch) in each st along top and bottom edges and evenly along the sides. Fasten off and weave in ends.

These were completed with some awesome color changes and without the border. I particularly love the purple stripey one.

The litttle wiggles of the stitch pattern are not so obvious in a single color but really "shine" when worked in a contrasting color. And both sides are so terrific, I think! The purple striped one is made by working three rows of purple (main color), one row of a contrasting color...repeated 7 times and followed with three more rows of the main color.

There are so many options with this one! I hope you enjoy the pattern. Feel free to share pictures of your creativity with this little cloth on my Facebook page here
