Valentine heart crochet in pinks and white, free crochet pattern by Susan Carlson of Felted Button | Colorful Crochet Patterns

::Sharing Some Heart Art::

The other day my sweet neighbor brought over a little treasure for me to see...

...a delicate and lacy little heart made from thread

The lady that made it has since
passed away and I don't know where the pattern is from--if you know who came up with this originally, please let me know because I would like to credit the designer--so after a wee bit of study I worked up one of my own.

First this one.

Then this one.

Then some more.

They are so unusual and fun that I thought I would share the "LOVE" by writing up the pattern I came up with for it. I changed things up--not just with color--but with an extra bit of edging, too.

Materials:

  • Yarn: I used small bits of each of the following: Paton’s Classic Wool—Colors: Magenta, Winter White & Orchid and Stitch Nation Washable Ewe—Color: Icing
  • Hook: F (4.0mm) –adjust according to your yarn weight selection (I wanted my hearts to be a bit stiff for hanging so used a smaller hook than suggested for worsted weight yarn.)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Mini clothes pins for hanging hearts to the hanging chain (2 per heart)

A few notes about making the hearts:

  • I made six hearts strung on a 52inch hanging chain. You can adjust the length of your chain, and number of hearts to suit you.
  • The center grid of the heart is made with one color and is completed in rows. The remaining portion of the heart is worked in the round with an optional contrasting color. If you choose not to use two colors, don’t fasten off after Row 4 of the grid and continue working the ‘cheeks’ of the heart.
  • My motifs worked up to be 4.5 inches (11.5cm) ‘cheek to cheek’ at the widest point. Adjust yarn weight and hook size to make smaller or bigger hearts.

Heart Motif:

Grid Square:

With color A, ch 11

Row 1: dc in 5th ch from hook, * ch 1, sk 1 ch, 1 dc in next ch; rep from * 3 times, turn

Rows 2-4: ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), sk ch-1 sp, dc in next, *ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, dc in next; rep from * 2 times, ch 1, dc in 3rd ch of turning ch, turn. Fasten off at the end of Row 4 and weave in ends.

‘Cheeks’ of the Heart:

You will be working into the “spaces” of the grid for Round 1—see picture section.

Rnd 1: Join contrasting color in any corner of grid with a sc, sc in same sp, 2sc in next sp, ch 3, 2sc in next sp, 5sc in corner sp, 2sc in next sp, ch 3, 2sc in next sp, 5sc in corner sp, 2sc in next 2 spaces, 5sc in next sp, 2 sc in next 2 spaces, 3sc in beginning corner, sl st to first sc

Rnd 2: sk 4 sc, 11 tr in ch3-loop, sk 4 sc, sl st to next sc, sk 4 sc, 11 tr in ch-3 loop, sk 4 sc, sl st to next sc

Rnd 3: ch 1, sc in same st as joining, sc in next 8, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next --center st of heart tip, sc in next 9, *(sc in tr, sc bet tr) 10 times, sc in tr*, sl st in dent of ‘cheeks’, rep * to *, sl st to first sc. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

I took the time to write it up as a downloadable PDF, too,  because then it is so nice and tidy to take with you. You can find it here on Felted Button or on Etsy here. It has a brief 2 page printable section with an additional 5 page picture section describing the how-to in detail. Thanks so much for your support!

It also has instructions for making the hanging chain, a fun little chaining method I just came up with today. It has probably been done before but I have never seen it. I made it by holding two colors together and then 'taking turns' completing a chain stitch with each color. (It looks so much tidier than chaining with both of them together, as the strands blend unevenly--know what I mean?). I made mine about 52" (132cm) long but you can make yours any length you wish. Then I hung my hearts on the chain using mini clothes pins--2 for each heart. Easy peasy.

I'm pretty happy with the end result--a little Valentine love that I can share with you--I call it "From the Heart" Bunting.

They make sweet little coasters, too.

As always, I love to see pictures of other's projects--so please share the "love" back! The best way to do that is via Facebook.
